VOID RATIO EFFECTS ON LATERAL STABILITY OF RIGID POLES PARTIALLY EMBEDDED IN SANDS

Abstract:

AN INVESTIGATION WAS MADE OF THE EFFECTS OF VOID RATIO ON THE LATERAL STABILITY OF RIGID POLES PARTIALLY EMBEDDED IN A SATURATED SAND AND SUBJECTED TO A HORIZONTAL LOAD APPLIED A VERTICAL DISTANCE, D, ABOVE THE GROUNDLINE. VOID RATIO EFFECTS ARE PRESENTED IN TERMS OF THE DIMENSIONLESS PARAMETER, RELATIVE DENSITY. NONDIMENSIONAL TECHNIQUES IN CONJUNCTION WITH SMALL-SCALE MODEL STUDIES ARE USED TO DETERMINE THE INTERRELATIONSHIP AMONG THE PHYSICAL VARIABLES . TESTS WERE CONDUCTED IN A QUICKSAND TANK DEVICE TO CONTROL RELATIVE DENSITY. A RESPONSE EQUATION IS GIVEN FROM WHICH THE LOAD-DEFLECTION CHARACTERISTICS OF A PROTOTYPE POLE MIGHT BE ESTIMATED. THE RESULTS HAVE BEEN COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS STUDIES AND SATISFACTORY AGREEMENT WAS OBTAINED. EXPLICIT EQUATIONS ARE GIVEN FOR CERTAIN CIRCULAR POLES, AND EXPRESSIONS ARE DEVELOPED FOR THE ULTIMATE VALUE OF THE MOMENT PARAMETER AND FOR THE INITIAL TANGENT MODULUS OF THE MOMENT-DEFLECTION RELATION. /AUTHOR/
