Abstract: TWO RECENTLY COMPLETED HIGHWAY CONTRACTS ARE USED AS A BACKGROUND FOR THE DISCUSSION OF SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE PROCEDURES IN USE IN THE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF HIGHWAYS IN CALIFORNIA. INVESTIGATIONS TO DETERMINE THE NEEDS FOR SUBSURFACE DRAINAGE ARE DESCRIBED AND CAN BE GROUPED UNDER FIELD REVIEWS, GEOLOGIC STUDIES, BORINGS, TESTS, AND ANALYSES. METHODS OF SUBSURFACE WATER CONTROLS MOST COMMONLY USED ARE STRIPPING AND BLANKETING WITH PERMEABLE MATERIAL, STABILIZATION TRENCHES, HORIZONTAL DRAINS, AND OTHER SOMEWHAT SPECIALIZED MEASURES. THE APPLICATION, CONSTRUCTION , AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THESE METHODS ARE DISCUSSED. PARTICULAR CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PERMEABLE MATERIAL THAT IS USED AS A PART OF MOST OF THE SUBSURFACE WATER CONTROL MEASURES. /AUTHOR/
