Abstract:

A DEVICE IS DESCRIBED CALLED THE DISC SHEAR APPARATUS, WHICH IS DESIGNED TO STUDY THE MASS ACTION AND INTERNAL PHYSICAL BOND OF ROAD SOILS AND AGGREGATES. SHEAR DISCS OF SOIL ARE MADE AND TESTED IN THIS SPECIAL APPARATUS. AFTER PREPARATION, THE DISCS ARE DRIED TO CONSTANT WEIGHT. ON ROAD SOILS, THE TEST IS MADE ON THE DRY DISC, AND IS THEN FOLLOWED BY TESTS OF SIMILAR DISCS CONTAINING SPECIFIC PERCENTAGES OF WATER. THE WATER IS ADDED AND DIFFUSED THROUGH THE DISC. SUCCESSIVE TESTS WITH INCREASING MOISTURE REVEAL THE RATE OF DIMINISHING SHEARING STRENGTH IN THE SAMPLE.
