Abstract:

This article insert briefly reviews the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) assessment of the capabilities of each state for collecting, managing, and using roadway safety data. The project was conducted through the Roadway Safety Data Partnership, a collaborative effort by FHWA and the states to develop and deliver robust, data-driven safety capabilities. The assessment showed that states were at different levels of roadway data practice. As part of a focused effort to deliver technical assistance, tools, training, and other resources, FHWA is launching the Roadway Data Improvement Program at the end of 2012 to meet state and local highway agencies' needs identified in the assessment.
