Title: SOME FACTORS INFLUENCING SHEAR STRENGTH AND COMPRESSIBILITY OF COMPACTED SOILS

Abstract: A REVIEW OF THE AVAILABLE LITERATURE INDICATES THAT DRY DENSITY ALONE IS NOT ALWAYS A RELIABLE INDEX FOR THE EVALUATION OF SHEAR STRENGTH AND COMPRESSIBILITY OF COMPACTED SOILS. OTHER FACTORS THAT AFFECT THESE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES FOR COHESIONLESS AND COHESIVE SOILS ARE DISCUSSED. THE SHEARING RESISTANCE AND COMPRESSIBILITY OF COHESIONLESS MATERIALS ARE INFLUENCED BY MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION, SIZE, GRADATION, SURFACE ROUGHNESS AND SHAPE OF THE INDIVIDUAL PARTICLES. THE ADDITIONAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE AS-COMPACTED SHEAR STRENGTH OF COMPACTED COHESIVE MATERIALS ARE MINERALOGICAL COMPOSITION MOLDING WATER CONTENT, SOIL STRUCTURE, EFFECTIVE STRESS, THIXOTROPY AND THE STRAIN LEVEL AT WHICH STRENGTH IS DEFINED. THE SOIL STRUCTURE WAS FOUND TO BE AN IMPORTANT FACTOR INFLUENCING THE STRENGTH ONLY WHEN IT IS DEFINED AT LOW STRAIN LEVELS, SUCH AS IN THE CBR-TYPE TEST. THE SOAKED STRENGTH OF CO- HESIVE MATERIALS IS FURTHER INFLUENCED BY THE SWELLING POTENTIAL OF A PARTICULAR SOIL AND THE AMOUNT OF SWELLING THAT IS ALLOWED TO TAKE PLACE DURING SOAKING. THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF COMPACTED COHESIVE SOILS IS INFLUENCED BY THE SAME FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE SHEAR STRENGTH WITH THE ADDITIONAL FACTOR THAT SOAKING UNDER A SURCHARGE LOAD MAY LEAD TO LARGE DEFORMATIONS. ALTHOUGH IT APPEARS THAT DRY DENSITY IS NOT ENTIRELY ADEQUATE FOR THE FIELD CONTACT OF ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF COMPACTED MATERIALS, FOR CONSTRUCTION THERE IS NO OTHER SIMPLE TEST THAT CAN BE PRESENTLY SUGGESTED AS AN ALTERNATIVE CORD-PRODUCT CONTROL PROCEDURE. /AUTHOR/
