Title: MULTISPECTRAL DATA INTERPRETATION FOR ENGINEERING SOILS MAPPING

Abstract: THE APPLICABILITY OF MULTISPECTRAL REMOTE SENSING TO ENGINEERING SOILS MAPPING WAS INVESTIGATED USING 15-CHANNEL IMAGERY AND FOUR TYPES OF AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS. COLOR FILM PROVED BEST FOR MAPPING SOILS AND SOIL CONDITIONS AND ALSO WAS MOST ECONOMICAL BECAUSE INTERPRETATION TIME WAS LESS AND THE RESULTS MOST RELIABLE. COLOR PRINTS WITH COLOR INFRARED TRANSPARENCIES PROVED THE BEST COMBINATION OF METHODS. ANALYSIS OF THE MULTISPECTRAL DATA BY VISUAL METHODS, DENSITOMETRY, AND COMPUTER SHOWED THE LAST METHOD TO BE THE BEST. A SPECIAL FEATURE IN THE COMPUTER ANALYSIS IS SELECTION OF OPTIMUM COMBINATIONS OF CHANNELS. OPTIONS IN THE PROGRAMS PERMIT SEPARATE MAP DISPLAYS, SHOWING VARIOUS SOILS AND SOIL CONDITIONS, TO BE DEVELOPED BY COMPUTER. THE SPECTRAL RESPONSE CONCEPT IS VALID FOR SOILS MAPPING, BUT ADEQUATE CONTROL IS NECESSARY TO ASSIST IN AUTOMATIC ANALYSIS. VEGETATIVE COVER IS A LIMITING FACTOR. /AUTHOR/
