ESTIMATING EFFICIENT SPACING FOR ARTERIALS AND EXPRESSWAYS

Abstract:

A TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR ESTIMATING EFFICIENT SPACINGS FOR ARTERIALS AND EXPRESSWAYS, WHICH PROVIDES A RATIONAL BASIS FOR PREPARING INITIAL SKETCH PLANS THAT CAN BE TESTED ON A COMPUTER. THIS METHOD INVOLVED POSING A NUMBER OF CRITERIA RELATED TO LAND PLANNING, TRANSPORTATION PLANNING, AND ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS. THE TECHNIQUE EMPLOYED WAS TO MINIMIZE THE SUM OF TWO COSTS- TRAVEL AND CONSTRUCTION COSTS- BOTH UNDER TRANSPORTATION PLANNING. USING A SIMPLIFIED NETWORK ( A GRID ) OF LOCAL AND ARTERIAL STREETS AND EXPRESSWAYS, THE CONSTRUCTION AND TRAVEL COSTS COULD BE STATED MATHEMATICALLY AS FUNCTIONS OF (1) SPACING, (2) TRIP DESTINATION DENSITIES, (3) TRIP LENGTH FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION, (4) UNIT CONSTRUCTION COSTS, (5) RELATIVE SPEEDS, AND (6) VALUE OF PERSONAL TIME. THIS MATHEMATICAL STATEMENT COULD THEN BE MINIMIZED BY MEANS OF THE DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS. MINIMUM SPACINGS CAN ALSO BE ESTIMATED USING GRAPHICAL MEANS, FOR A SLIGHTLY MORE SIMPLIFIED STATEMENT OF TOTAL COSTS. RESULTS APPEAR TO BE REASONABLE.
