Abstract:

THE CENTRAL CONCEPT IN THE CONTROL OF A FREEWAY SYSTEM IS THE CONTROL OF EACH INDIVIDUAL ENTRANCE RAMP. THIS REPORT DEALS WITH THE CONTROL OF INDIVIDUAL ENTRANCE RAMPS-IN PARTICULAR, WITH THE DESIGN AND INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS OF A GAP ACCEPTANCE MERGING CONTROL SYSTEM. THE OPERATION OF SUCH A CONTROLLER AND THE DETECTION AND DISPLAY REQUIREMENTS ARE DISCUSSED IN SUFFICIENT DETAIL TO ALLOW THE WRITING OF FUNCTIONAL SPECIFICATIONS AND THE DESIGN OF A MERGING CONTROL SYSTEM. /AUTHOR/
