Title: Research Pays Off: Safety Effectiveness of the HAWK or Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon
Accession Number: 01375600
Record Type: Component
Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK), referred to as a pedestrian hybrid beacon in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), is designed to increase pedestrian safety at crossings that have high traffic volumes, that have wide streets, or that have high operating speeds. A comprehensive evaluation was needed, however, to establish the beacon's effectiveness. This article describes the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)-sponsored before and after study that confirmed its safety effectiveness.
