Abstract:

This Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project examined the feasibility of using a laser monitoring system to provide real-time data to characterize aggregate properties in a laboratory or field environment. The approach makes use of the known physical, chemical and mechanical properties and aggregate criteria as defined by AASHTO and ASTM, and correlates these properties with spectral emission data induced by a laser in a process referred to as Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). Deployment of such a system can provide a layer of quality control that the industry currently does not have, thereby ensuring that the transportation infrastructure is being rehabilitated or constructed using quality materials that maximize service life.
