Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: When the preliminary route for Interstate 69 in west Tennessee encountered previously unrecorded landfills, the state’s Department of Transportation and Department of Environment and Conservation teamed up for a rapid-response investigation and solution, using geophysical methods to characterize and assess the environmental impacts. The questions were: How can transportation professionals deal with environmental surprises and keep a project on schedule and on budget? and Are technologies available to fast-track a project past environmental roadblocks? This article gives an account of the approaches taken at one of the problem landfills. The account illustrates some practical answers to these questions.
