Title: Urban Regeneration in Historic Downtown Areas: An Ex Ante Evaluation of Traffic Impacts in Athens, Greece
Accession Number: 01371507
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Urban transportation networks play an important role in the quality and living conditions of cities. Air pollution and negative aesthetics are adverse impacts often attributed to the structure and operations of a city's transportation system. Modern transportation projects in urban areas focus on achieving sustainability and on enhancing the urban environment. In this paper the authors present and discuss expected impacts of a major city transportation project, the pedestrianization of a major five-lane central arterial, in the Athens, Greece downtown area, through an ex-ante traffic and environmental evaluation of the project on a city wide level. The project is presented in detail and ex-ante evaluation results are discussed. Analysis outcomes indicate that while, in the short-run, traffic conditions will worsen, a potential traffic dissipation (evaporation) resulting from the project may significantly improve traffic and environmental conditions in the Athens downtown area.
