Title: Modeling Public Acceptance Toward Sustainable Transportation: A Case Study of Klang Valley, Malaysia
Accession Number: 01368708
Record Type: Component
Abstract: It is always a challenge to get a sustainable transportation system implemented in urban cities. This is especially the case for developing countries where such policies and implementation need to overcome competing national needs (such as defense, trade and industry, education, and basic housing and transport infrastructure). Since transportation investments are mostly publicly-funded, it is important for the public to support any sustainable transportation initiatives put forth for consideration by the government. This paper therefore investigates potential factors contributing to public acceptance of sustainable transportation systems in developing countries using theories of planned action and behavior. Using the Klang Valley in Malaysia as a case study, a revealed preference questionnaire survey was conducted to solicit opinions on the acceptance towards sustainable transportation. A public acceptance model was developed using structural equation modeling. The results presented in this paper show that public intention of acceptance and socio-economic characteristics of individuals contribute strongly to their actual behavior in supporting the system. Factors affecting the intention to adapt and use sustainable transportation include: awareness, attitude, government actions, and service availability. The findings presented in this paper allow useful insights in setting future sustainable transportation policies in Malaysia.
