Abstract: RESEARCH CONDUCTED ON THE PROBLEMS OF PROPORTIONING MIXTURES AND GRADING OF AGGREGATES IS REVIEWED. IT HAS BEEN DETERMINED THAT THE STRENGTH OF PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE VARIES WITH THE AMOUNT OF ACTUAL SOLID MATERIAL PRESENT IN A GIVEN VOLUME, WITH THE RELATIVE PARTS OF THIS VOLUME THAT ARE CEMENT AND AGGREGATE. THE COMMITTEE CONSIDERS THERE IS MERIT IN THIS METHOD OF PORTIONING, SINCE IT MAY ULTIMATELY ELIMINATE MANY OF THE VARIABLES WHICH HAVE BEEN DETERMINED IN CONCRETE STRENGTHS, PROBABLY RESULTING IN SOME MEASURE FROM INACCURATE VOLUMETRIC PROPORTIONING.
