Abstract:

A systematic analysis of how matched and mismatched joints affect the mechanical performance of unbonded concrete overlays is conducted based on data collected from construction cycle 4 (CC4) at the National Airfield Pavement Test Facility (NAPTF). Changes contemporaneous to crack observation are ascertained in the strain response history plots, by examining the critical points where the response patterns change before and after the first observed crack. In this data, strain gages in slabs with matched joints yield the smallest average daily response most frequently. However, the magnitude of response cannot be directly used to predict the time of the first crack observation; thus, other parameters are suggested for future exploration. Also, with the first observed crack, the effective in-place modulus drops significantly compared to the initial modulus. The total joint stiffness calculated by Crovetti’s model at mismatched joints is higher than that at matched joints for most cases. This provides strong support for mismatching joints for unbonded concrete overlays, in term of taking advantage of underlying support to improve load transfer efficiency. From the visual distress data, it is found that when underlying slabs are in poor condition, the overlay slabs with mismatched joints remain intact longer.
