Title: Trip Rate and Travel Time: Perspective in China Cities

Abstract: Trip rate and travel time have been variables of central importance to the understanding of the demand for travel. As one of the fastest growing developing countries, the characteristics of trip rate and travel time in Chinese cities has not been systematically analyzed due to the shortage of relevant data. Based on 30 groups of survey data in 24 cities, the characteristics of trip rate and travel time in Chinese cities are analyzed via statistical methodology. Some of the results of this investigation are compared with those found in some developed countries that indicated different regularities existing in Chinese cities. The overall trip rate is lower, while the inelastic trip rate is distinctly higher. At aggregated level, overall trip rate turns out to be relative steady in two groups distinguished by city size (measured by population). However city size has little impact on motorized trip rate. Average travel time expenditure in Chinese cities varies across large scope and is affected by city size significantly. The maximum travel time is close to 1.5 hours, while the minimum is just over 0.5 hour. Hence, the assumption that travel time expenditure is a stable value asserted in some extant researches is reasonable only if city size is in certain extent. The data and findings of this paper would help to better understand the travel characteristics in Chinese cities and complement standpoints of travel time expenditure around the world.
