Abstract:

Traffic management center (TMC) software is an essential component of intelligent transportation system (ITS) deployments. To ensure that the TMC software’s various modules and algorithms are performing as expected, traffic agencies need to test this software, and thereby identify any constraints or bugs present, before its actual use. Microscopic traffic simulation can support the evaluation needed by allowing the emulation of real-world field deployments of ITS. This paper introduces the development of an environment that utilizes an off-the-shelf traffic microscopic simulation tool for TMC software evaluation. The environment includes interfaces between a TMC software, on one side, and virtual point traffic detectors and/or automatic vehicle identification (AVI) readers in the simulation tool, on the other side. The use cases of this study illustrate that such developments can provide powerful support to the evaluation of TMC software.
