As transportation asset management has evolved over the years, so has its definition. Most of today's definitions reflect a strategic, performance-based process for making decisions about the allocation of investments and resources; considerations include multiple assets, alternative funding strategies, risk, and an asset's economic and engineering characteristics throughout its life. The principles encompassed in most transportation asset management definitions are briefly outlined here.
