Title: DISCUSSION ON LOW COST BRIDGES
Accession Number: 00209267
Record Type: Component
Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: A TABLE IS PRESENTED FROM A REPORT OF A JOINT COMMITTEE OF THE AMERICAN RAILWAY ENGINEERING ASSOCIATION AND THE AMERICAN WOOD PRESERVERS' ASSOCIATION SHOWING THE SERVICE RECORD FOR TREATED TIES. THIS TABLE SHOWS THAT TREATED TIES MAY BE EXPECTED TO GIVE SERVICE FOR AN AVERAGE OF 25 YEARS. SINCE MOST TREATED TIES ARE REMOVED FOR OTHER CAUSES THAN DECAY, THE MORE EXPENSIVE TIMBERS IN A BRIDGE SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO GIVE LONGER SERVICE. IT IS FELT THAT THE MATTER OF BRIDGE OBSOLESCENCE SHOULD RECEIVE MORE ATTENTION.
