Abstract:

A THEORETICAL INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED OF STRESSES AND DEFORMATIONS IN ROAD SLABS ON THE BASIS OF THE MATHEMATICAL THEORY OF ELASTICITY. THE ANALYSIS LEADS TO DIAGRAMS OF SUCH DEFLECTIONS AND MOMENTS AS ARE DUE TO WHEEL LOADS WHICH ACT EITHER AT AN APPRECIABLE DISTANCE FROM THE EDGE OR AT THE EDGE. THE RELATIVE STIFFNESS OF THE SLAB AND SUBGRADE IS OF CONSEQUENCE. THE THEORIES OF THE CORNER BREAK, DEFLECTIONS AND STRESSES CAUSED BY WHEEL LOADS AT THE EDGE AND AT A DISTANCE FROM THE EDGE, AND EFFECT OF CHANGE OF TEMPERATURE ARE DISCUSSED.
