GEORGIA SATELLITE FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT EVALUATION AND ITS APPLICATION TO DESIGN

Abstract:

IN A STUDY OF THE DETERIORATION OF FAILURE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IN GEORGIA, U.S.A, SERVICEABILITY WAS ESTIMATED VISUALLY AND FROM MEASURED DEPTH OF RUTS. TOTAL TRAFFIC WAS RELEVANT TRAFFIC COUNTS AND UNDISTURBED SUBGRADE SAMPLES WERE TESTED. THE SERVICEABILITY RATING WAS FOUND TO BE A FUNCTION OF THE SAFETY FACTOR OF THE SUBGRADE AGAINST SHEAR FAILURE AND THE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC AND A SIMILAR RELATION HAS BEEN FOUND FROM THE AASHO ROAD TEST. IT IS POSSIBLE TO USE THE AASHO INTERIM DESIGN FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS IN GEORGIA, OR A DIRECT DESIGN METHOD CAN BE DERIVED FROM THE RELATIONS BETWEEN TRAFFIC, SOIL BEARING CAPACITY AND SERVICEABILITY. /RRL/
