Title: AN INVESTIGATION OF THE DESTRUCTIVE EFFECT OF FLOTATION TIRES ON FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
Accession Number: 00206553
Record Type: Component
Abstract: FLOTATION TYRES HAVING A WIDE BASE ARE BEING INCREASINGLY USED INSTEAD OF DUAL WHEELS. THE DESTRUCTIVE EFFECT OF THE CONSEQUENT SINGLE-AXLE LOADING HAS BEEN STUDIED IN TERMS OF PAVEMENT DEFLETION AND STRAIN WITH THE AID OF LINEAR VARIABLE DIFFERENTIAL TRANSFORMER GAUGE INSTALLATIONS AND A BENKELMAN BEAMS. ANALYSIS OF RESULTS AT TEST SITES HAVING A WIDE RANGE OF STRUCTURES INDICATE THAT A SINGLE- AXLE LEAD OF 12000 LB WITH A FLOTATION TYRE EQUALS OR EXCEED AN 18000 LB DUAL-WHEEL LEAD IN DESTRUCTIVE EFFECT. INFORMATION IS GIVEN ON THE RELATIONS BETWEEN TYRE PRESSURE, PAVEMENT TEMPERATURE, AXLE LEADING, PAVEMENT DEFLECTION, SURFACE TENSILE STRAIN AND TYPE OF WHEEL LOADING. /RRL/
