Title: ANALYSIS AND USE OF CONDITION DATA IN THE DESIGN OF PAVEMENTS

Abstract: PAVEMENT CONDITION SURVEYS FOR DESIGN PURPOSES SHOULD RESULT IN A RATING /OR RATINGS/ WHICH WOULD INDICATE BOTH THE RIDING COMFORT AND THE STRUCTURAL ADEQUACY OF A PAVEMENT . THE PRESENT SERVICEABILITY INDEX /PSI/ IS ONE MEANS OF OBTAINING SUCH RATINGS. HOWEVER, FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS THE EFFECT OF CRACKING AND PATCHING ON THE PSI IS SMALL /ONLY 0.3 IN A SCALE FROM 0.0 TO 5.0/. CASES HAVE BEEN NOTED IN VIRGINIA WHERE RATHER SEVERELY CRACKED PAVEMENTS HAVE HIGHER PSI VALUES THAN NEW PAVEMENTS WITH POORER RIDING QUALITY. IN ORDER TO ESTIMATE FUTURE SERVICEABILITY FOR DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE PURPOSES A RATING IS REQUIRED WHICH FURTHER DESCRIBES STRUCTURAL ADEQUACY. STRIP FILM PHOTOGRAPHY HAS BEEN FOUND USEFUL FOR MEASURING CRACKING AND PATCHING OF RIGID PAVEMENTS.
