Abstract:

THE PAVEMENT DESIGN PROBLEM IS DISCUSSED IN THE FOLLOWING PARTS: (1) ANALYSIS OF THE PAVEMENT DESIGN PROBLEM, (2) BEHAVIOR PATTERNS DEVELOPED IN MASSES OF GRANULAR MATERIALS UNDER LOAD, (3) MATHEMATICAL RELATIONSHIP, (4) TESTS OF SOILS AND BITUMINOUS MIXTURES, AND (5) DESIGN PROCEDURE. A CHART IS PRESENTED WHICH SERVES TO ILLUSTRATE AND IDENTIFY THE ESSENTIAL PROPERTIES OR CHARACTERISTICS OF TRAFFIC, PAVEMENT AND FOUNDATION SOILS, ALL OF WHICH MUST BE EVALUATED TO ACCOMPLISH A COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN. THE HISTORY OF SOIL TECHNOLOGY IS BRIEFLY TRACED AND COMPARISONS MADE BETWEEN ATTEMPTS TO REACH A SOLUTION BY MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS AND THE EMPIRICAL APPROACH IMPLYING THE EXPERIMENTAL METHOD. DIAGRAMS AND PHOTOGRAPHS ARE PRESENTED TO ILLUSTRATE THE FLOW PATTERNS DEVELOPED BY SANDS OR CLAY MATERIALS UNDER LOAD. TRAFFIC LOAD EFFECTS ARE SHOWN TO BE NEARLY COMPARABLE TO A STRIP LOADING AND THE MOST PROBABLE PLANES OF STRIP ARE CALCULATED FOR SOILS POSSESSING DIFFERENT PROPORTIONS OF FRICTION AND COHESION. TEST TRACK DATA ANALYSIS INDICATES THAT THE REQUIRED THICKNESS OF PAVEMENT AND BASE IS PROPORTIONAL TO THE WIDTH OF THE LOADED AREA, TO THE AVERAGE TIRE CONTACT PRESSURE AND TO THE LOG OF THE NUMBER OF AXLE LOAD REPETITIONS. THE ABILITY OF THE BASEMENT SOIL UNDER THE PAVEMENT TO CARRY LOADS IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO THE RESISTANCE VALUE OF THE SOIL AND TO THE BENDING STRENGTH OR MODULUS OF RUPTURE OF THE PAVEMENT. TEST PROCEDURES ARE PRESENTED FOR EVALUATING AND OBTAINING QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENTS OF THE ESSENTIAL PROPERTIES OF SOILS, INCLUDING SPECIAL COMPACTOR, STABILOMETER, COHESIOMETER AND SWELLED PRESSURE DEVICES TOGETHER WITH A DESCRIPTION OF THE METHODS OF PREPARATION OF TEST SPECIMENS AND CONDUCT OF TESTS. PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED WHICH ARE FOLLOWED IN DESIGNING PAVEMENT BASE AND SURFACE COURSES. A CHART IS PRESENTED SHOWING EVIDENCE OF CORRELATION BETWEEN CALCULATED VALUES AND THE MINIMUM VALUES INDICATED UNDER ACTUAL WHEEL LOAD CONDITIONS. /AUTHOR/
