Abstract: A SERIES OF DESIGN CURVES FOR 18,000 LB AXLE LOADING IS BASED ON THE THREE-LAYER ELASTIC THEORY AND TAKES A FATIGUE FACTOR INTO ACCOUNT. THE DESIGN METHOD PROVIDES A PAVEMENT THICKNESS WHICH IS ADEQUATE TO PREVENT FAILURE AT CRITICAL LOCATIONS IN THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE CONSIDERATION BEING GIVEN TO THE EXTENT OF STRAIN /DISPLACEMENT/ IN THE SUBGRADE AND MAGNITUDE OF TENSILE STRAIN AT THE BASE OF THE ASPHALT SURFACING. WITHIN CALCULABLE LIMITS SURFACING AND BASE CAN BE REPLACED BY EACH OTHER. EXAMPLES DEMONSTRATE THE USE OF THESE PRINCIPLES FOR WEAK AND STRONG PAVEMENTS. /RRL/
