Title: USE OF SILICONE ADMIXTURE IN BRIDGE DECK CONCRETE
Accession Number: 00214095
Record Type: Component
Abstract: THE SILICONE ADMIXTURE WAS USED AND EVALUATED IN CONJUNCTION WITH BLAST-FURNACE SLAG COARSE AGGREGATE, WITH LIMESTONE COARSE AGGREGATE, AND WITH GRAVEL COARSE AGGREGATE ON THREE BRIDGE DECKS. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE BASIC LIQUID SILICONE ADMIXTURE ALTERED PLAIN CONCRETE BY (1) ENTRAINING AIR; (2) EXCESSIVELY RETARDING THE SET; (3) SERVING AS AN INTERNAL LUBRICANT AND PERMITTING A REDUCTION IN MIX WATER; (4) RAISING THE UNIT STRENGTH; AND (5) INCREASING THE RESISTANCE TO FREE-THAW DETERIORATION. IT FUNCTIONED EQUALLY WELL WITH ANY OF THE THREE AGGREGATES. THE SILICONE RETARDED THE FORMATION OF SCALE AS OBSERVED ON ALL THREE TEST BRIDGES.
