Abstract:

A GENERAL REVIEW OF CONCEPTS EXPLAINING THE NATURE OF ADHESION AT AN INTERFACE BETWEEN 2 CONDENSED PHASES IS PRESENTED. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE SURFACE ENERGY OF A SOLID AND ITS THEORETICAL TENSILE STRENGTH IS EXPLORED. A MOLECULAR CONCEPT OF SURFACE ENERGY IS PRESENTED IN WHICH THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG INTERMOLECULAR FORCES, SURFACE TENSION, AND WORK ARE DISCUSSED. A GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF INTERFACES AND TRIPLE JUNCTIONS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO CONTACT ANGLE WETTABILITY AND ADHESIVE BONDING ARE THEN PRESENTED. TWO EXAMPLES OF THE EFFECTS OF ADHESION ON THE MECHANICAL PROPOERTIES OF COMPOSITE MATERIALS ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE THE IMPORTANCE OF ADHESION IN MULTIPHASE SYSTEMS. /AUTHOR/
