Abstract:

The author points out that globalization's increase of social interconnectivity multiplies the possibilities for the type, timing, and location of a terrorist attack that eludes the specific technology at an airport or other venue. Layers of security must protect against ever-changing threats interacting with ever-changing vulnerabilities leading to ever-changing risks. In addition to the goals of finding terrorists, explosives, and weapons, other important issues, such as intelligence operations, psychological factors, public relations, and psychological warfare, affect aviation security and terrorism in an era of globalization.
