This article briefly describes the restoration of the historic Hermit Road in Grand Canyon National Park in 2008. The National Park Service faced the challenge of retaining a high level of historic integrity while rehabilitating and improving the road. Improvements included widening the roadway and resurfacing; enhancement of existing overlooks, parking areas, and trails; construction of formal shuttle bus stops; and the addition of a paved pedestrian and bicycle trail on a separate alignment.
