Abstract:

Recent advances in mobile technology allow busy employees to take work wherever they go. Devices like the Blackberry or iPhone have become widely used and keep improving their hardware, storage, flash memory and battery life. Such low cost tools can translate into improved productivity in the workforce and significant cost savings. The presentation focuses on various mobile technologies that can empower the transit workforce. For a demand response agency, information like electronic manifests, text messaging, automatic cancels or no-shows can be sent directly to a mobile device. In return, the device can report back arrival status, no-show requests, fares collected, speed and odometer readings and more. When geocoding bus stops, mobile units like a Tablet PC are very useful. Surveyors can simply update information on the field, and enter it only once. The Tablet PC uses GIS mapping to provide surveyors with a visual reference, for more precise geocoding. There’s no doubt that the use of mobile technology will only increase. Transit organizations now have access to advanced tools that can truly put the power in the hands of operators.
