Abstract:

As the demographics and dynamics of today’s workforce changes it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify and manage the skill needs of organizations – both large and small. From customer service staff, who interact with transit riders every day, to the mechanics that maintain buses, rail vehicles and the infrastructure it makes managing your organization’s talent resources a vital part of providing safe, reliable and efficient transportation. Two of the most significant challenges managers in the transit industry are encountering related to their workforce are 1) the skills lost when the most experienced workers retire or leave the organizations; and 2) constantly changing technology. While those are significant, other challenges that face managers include: the 24/7 nature of the business, increasing service demands, and insufficient numbers of people interested in transit careers. Faced with the prospect of doing more with less, managers are challenged with tasking the right people for the right jobs. Matching the skills of the employee to the job being performed, indentifying skill gaps in the process is not easy to do, but increasingly important. From the front office to the maintenance shop identifying skills, providing training, closing the skill gaps while documenting training is critical for long term operational success.
