Abstract:

In 1998, a series of test sections were constructed on US Highway 18 just east of Tripp, South Dakota as part of a SDDOT research project SD1997-03 Recycled Asphalt Concrete and Base Materials for Bases of New Asphalt Concrete Pavements. The experimental design for the sections involved a matrix including equipment type, compaction level and ratio of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) to granular base. Mechanical stabilization was the only technique employed and the RAP content was controlled by milling the existing AC surface and adding virgin aggregate in-situ. The sections were then tested with falling weight deflectometer (FWD), pavement distress surveys, ground penetrating radar (GPR) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests. These tests showed that the values of CBR increased as the asphalt content in the base material decreased. The second, more surprising, test result showed that as the asphalt content increased the deflection from the FWD decreased. The pavement distress observed after nine years, primarily alligator cracking, appears to correlate with a combination of overcompaction and the lower quality of base uniformity obtained using a single stage reclaimer. Finally, the asphalt content has no effect on the pavement distress. The fact the pavement distress is not correlated to the CBR data implies that this test is unsuitable for characterizing recycled base materials.
