Abstract:

The environmental concerns as well as the energy dependency of our society leads to the fact that the transportation sector is the one where the attention should be focused, in order to reduce its energetic impact. The hybrid vehicles appear as an alternative, in terms of new propulsion technologies. This research had the main purpose of analyzing the energetic performance of the hybrid vehicle Lexus RX 400h through experimental on-board measurements. Several speed profiles were analyzed, namely: successive stop and go cycles; three speed profiles (50, 90 and 120 kph, involving accelerations, decelerations and constant speed driving) for three types of driving (calm, intermediate and aggressive); entry in an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) booth using the same three patterns; entry in a roundabout (with and without a stop at its entry). The obtained results demonstrate the advantages of this type of technology when circulating in urban environments. In the stop and go situations the internal combustion engine did not work (the torque needed to impulse the vehicle in the stop and go situations was only supported by the electrical engines), as well as in the situations of constant low speeds (50 kph or 60 kph when passing through the ETC). The important auxiliary support given by the electric engines in the accelerations, as well as the importance of the energy regeneration system on the batteries’ load recovery was also demonstrated. When compared with similar conventional vehicles, the Lexus RX 400h has lower combined energy consumption between 1.2% and 60%.
