Abstract:

The ULTra PRT system has been installed at Heathrow airport and is starting operational readiness trials with a view to full operations in 2010. This paper will review the process which has been undertaken to prepare for operations and draw conclusions about key issues which are involved. The process has involved a systematic testing program involving the progress through Single Component Tests, Single Vehicle Tests and Multi Vehicle Tests before the involvement of any passengers. This will be described using examples and case studies For fully automatic vehicles safety is of paramount importance. The safety clearance process for the system is reviewed. This is based on the UK Railway Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (ROGS) regulations. This has several new features in its application to the ULTra system. The paper will be updated to provide an appreciation of the position at the time of presentation
