Abstract:

This paper reviews the process by which Caltrain has evaluated the suitability of European-style commuter rail equipment for the suitability of operation in a shared use enviornment. The Caltrain shared use operating scenario is unique in that it intends to operate the new train sets in an interchangeable manner with existing conventional locomotive hauled passenger trains, while providing the traditional temporal separation with freight trains. The paper summarizes each part of the process, concluding with a comparison of the crashworthiness of the European-style equipment with FRA-compliant vehicles.
