Abstract:

This paper investigates the current transport ‘crisis’ in Dhaka exploring the conventional and technological approaches that might be applied in order to reduce such a situation. Developing megacities have benefited from the use of simple and affordable intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technologies and Dhaka could also benefit in a situation where conventional approaches have had limited or no success. As such, the paper puts forward a number of ITS technologies, most notably closed circuit television (CCTV) for traffic surveillance, probe vehicles equipped with global positioning systems (GPS) and electronic payment systems for public transport to reduce the transport ‘crisis’ in Dhaka. The ideas explored in this paper require further research which may involve feasibility studies on each of the ITS applications most notably to compare cost effectiveness. What is clear is that Government commitment and political desire are all important as is the need for adequate funding if the inhabitants of Dhaka are likely to see an enhancement in transport situation.
