Abstract:

The perception response time of drivers is one of the most important human factors that have significant influence on driving safety. This is the only parameter that unites all car-following models proposed so far. Some early literatures dealt this parameter as a constant term however some recent investigations conducted on this have mentioned that such assumption might not be valid. The response time might be some relationship with driving conditions. This paper investigated the response time of drivers based on vehicle trajectory data collected from car-following experiments conducted on a test track in Japan using RTK GPS receivers. A new method was proposed to estimate time variant response time under car-following situations incorporating some important features of car-following behavior such as drivers’ perception threshold to recognize the stimulus from the vehicle in front. The method was implemented to compute a large number of time variant response time data from the experimental data. The data was analyzed to investigate inter-personal and intra-personal variations in the response time and influence of driving conditions on it. The investigation revealed some important features of car-following behavior with regards to the response time of drivers along with some interesting findings on interpersonal and intrapersonal variations. The new method performed well to improve quality of the estimated response time data.
