Abstract:

The usage of chemical admixtures in concrete mixture design has made their interaction with Portland cement complicated and unpredictable in the performance of concrete pavements. Occasionally these interactions may cause a serious set retardation or excessively fast stiffening in construction fields, which is generally defined as concrete incompatibilities. The objective of this study was to develop a reliable test method to predict potential incompatibilities of concrete materials through the measurement of the heat of hydration in cement paste. An investigation was performed to assess the influence of cement, supplementary cementitious materials, and lignin-based chemical admixtures on the heat of hydration of the mixtures at three different ambient temperature conditions (i.e. 10, 24, and 35¢ªC). It was observed that C4 cement, a sulfate-resisting cement, tends to mitigate the abnormal chemical reactions between the lignin-based chemical and Class C fly ash compositions showing the improvement of heat of hydration for overall mixtures regardless of ambient temperatures. This study also examines the applicability of the isothermal heat-conduction microcalorimetry (IHCMC) to cement paste in order to identify concrete incompatibilities at various temperature conditions. The results obtained from the present study showed that the IHCMC has a great potential in identifying those incompatibilities in concrete before the concrete is placed under various temperature conditions, which can, in turn, avoid related workability problems and setting time as well as heat evolution abnormalities.
