Since the research and application of porous asphalt pavements have just started in China at present, there are no corresponding design and construction specifications. Therefore, it is essential to verify the design through the actual field performance. This paper summarizes a long term performance monitoring study on Yan-Tong Expressway, which includes a section of porous asphalt (PA) surface together with stone mastic asphalt (SMA) and another type of dense graded (denoted as AK) surface in the same section. The changes of the road performance were analyzed, compared with the up-to-date understandings and primarily explained herein. The results of this study show that porous asphalt pavement performs well under the extreme hot and humid climate together with high percentage of truck out of a heavy traffic volume on Yan-Tong Expressway. The continuous monitoring and further analysis are underway.
