Abstract:

This paper analyzes the impact of adverse weather on bus travel times. APC data was used to analyze the differences of bus actual travel times under different weather conditions. After evaluating bus travel times from the collected APC data, it was shown that buses operating with late arrival times at early time points (TPs) can catch up at later TPs under normal weather. However, when it rains, it is difficult for buses to catch up and delays increase as they progress along the Route. The mean travel times between each pair of TPs under rain were generally greater than those under normal weather. The significance level or p-values generated by the statistical analyses showed that the differences of the travel time means for each pair of TPs were not statistically significant in most situations. A reason for this result could be the fact that the data representing adverse weather conditions was very limited. In general, vehicle boarding and alighting times increase under adverse weather conditions, while the standard deviation of boarding and alighting times decrease in adverse weather.
