Abstract:

The roots of decision support systems (DSSs) can be traced to the early days of computing. Since many DSSs involve public involvement in the compiling and presentation of information to gain sufficient insight into problems, a necessary first step in any DSS is to build a user interface (UI) that assembles and visualizes the relevant data and decision alternatives in an intuitive easy-to-use way. This goal is further complicated when spatial and temporal factors significantly impact the decision. One technology that is being investigated for UI development is Google Earth (GE). GE provides decision makers a robust, visually rich, and interactive interface that is simple to use. What was once considered a “gee-whiz” consumer curiosity has now evolved into an enterprise solution for real-world decision support applications, allowing decision support systems to integrate the power of 3D visualization into complex business processes. Over the past 2 years, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) has been working with Google to explore the use of their GE product as a core technology for decision support.
