Title: DEVELOPMENT OF A SNOW PLOUGH/SALT SPREADING VEHICLE FOR ICE AND SNOW CLEARANCE OF MOTORWAYS IN ENGLAND

Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: In 1973 it was decided that the Department of the Environment would confine itself to supply vehicles for highway winter maintenance only. This prompted a different design approach because the operational parameters of a snow-plow/salt spreading vehicle for use only on highways dictates different design requirements. The general requirements of the chasis/cab called for a gross vehicle weight of 24 tons, a 6x4 configuration, a tractive effort of 25,000 lbs. with a low center of gravity. Some of the body design specifications were: a payload capacity of 12 tons with a spreading device at the rear of the body, a hopper shaped body to give good salt flow, a cable of spreading salt to a width of 60 feet symmetrically and asymmetrically, and a spread rate from 1.16 oz./sq. yd. (40 g/sq. m) down to .29 oz./sq. yard (10 g/sq. m). From operational trials that spanned three winters, it was concluded that the greatest benefit of such a vehicle is the capability to spread salt at .29 oz./sq. yard (10 g/sq. m) for the precautionary salting operation, which is unattainable with the existing 6x6 vehicles. The major areas of cost benefit of these vehicles are: savings of about 30% on salt usage, savings of 40% on cost of 6x4 chasis/cab as opposed to 6x6 reduced service and maintenance costs of 20%, and increased operational efficiency due to savings in staff time and vehicle down time.
