Title: VALUE ENGINEERING ANALYSIS OF SELECTED MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES

Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: A series of value engineering studies of selected road maintenance activities was initiated by the Federal Highway Administration to demonstrate that value engineering techniques could be successfully applied to maintenance activities and to improve these activities. Because the value engineering process uses the team approach, teams of state engineers were formed to conduct the studies. Each study involved teams of two or three engineers from four states. The work was coordinated by the Federal Highway Administration at four joint meetings held during the course of the project. A summary report has been prepared for each study. Five studies have been completed, and five more are under way. The total cost of the five completed studies was $432,000 with an estimated savings of more than $7 million among only the states involved. Based solely on the cost savings, it has been shown that the value engineering process can be successfully used to perform an in-depth analysis of maintenance activities. Other, less tangible benefits have also been realized. /Author/
