The scope of the GPS component included deployment of in-vehicle GPS data loggers to 250 of the 800 households participating in the Pre-Test, with a goal of obtaining 200 complete GPS households. This Pre-Test was intended to finalize the scope of the regional survey, which had a target of 10,000 households in the full study and 600 households in the GPS component. The purpose of using GPS technology in this regional household travel survey, as defined by MWCOG, is to obtain a better estimate of vehicle trip rates and vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for non-home trips as well as to collect route choice data. MWCOG wanted to use the GPS Pre-Test results as independent estimates of underreporting for both trip rates and VMT for the full Pre-Test sample. This paper presents the background and results of the Pre-Test GPS component and discussed the current status of the regional household travel survey and GPS data analysis plans.
