Recently wireless location technology develops very fast, and the accuracy of mobile location has been remarkably improved, which provides the possibility of using real-time cellular phone data to give a fairly good estimation on travel speed or travel time in freeway network. Network-based cellular probe traffic monitoring system has much lower cost than the traditional GPS probe method, and cellular probe technology can improve the utilization of the existing facilities. This paper summarizes several previous studies and field tests, analyzes raw cell phone data from one wireless carrier, proposes one simple traffic model and applies Kalman Filtering to estimate real-time traffic states, and tries to address the potential issues and feasible additional refinement for the future field deployment and operational application.
