Abstract:

A search of the related literature show a large data and information gap in child transport safety in the Persian Gulf Region. Objectives – The study objectives were to: determine the extent of children involvement in injurious and fatal road accidents, and recommend measures to improve child safety in transportation. Method – Due to lack of data on child-involved road accidents, a survey design was implemented and a random sample of 1200 employed household heads were person-interviewed, resulting in 1162 completed questionnaires, as the database for the study. Findings – The average sample household experienced 1.2 road traffic accidents in the last five years, resulting in a mean of 0.19 injured, and a mean of 0.02 fatally-injured children in these accidents. Findings also indicated that both the methods of child transportation, and parents' awareness of child safety in transportation, are poor and in need of urgent attention by responsible decision-makers and safety officials. Conclusions/Recommendations – Child-transport safety laws must be enacted, the school bus transportation system should be re-established, and parents awareness of child safety in transportation must be improved.
