Title:
Advanced Crash Analysis: Computer Simulation Models Lead to Safety Improvements
Accession Number:
01086716
Abstract:
This article briefly reviews the significant advances in computer simulation for analyzing highway crashes. Full-scale crash tests have shown high levels of correlation between real and simulated crashes. The supporting computer software allows detailed animation of a crash; generates multiple quantitative measures of performance, as well as multiple and isolated views of the event and specific parts; and assesses the influence of external conditions. These advanced techniques have reduced the time needed to improve vehicle and hardware designs, increasing the safety of the transportation system.
