Title: Manufacture and Testing of a Filament Wound Composite Bridge Superstructure

Availability: National Technical Information Service 5301 Shawnee Road Abstract: This Innovations Deserving Exploratory Analysis (IDEA) project set out to determine the manufacturability and experimental performance of a conceptual design for a filament wound bridge superstructure. The project had the following objectives: (1) Build a small number of scaled prototypes to demonstrate the feasibility of the manufacturing procedure; (2) Test the prototypes by measuring their stiffness, strength and fatigue properties; and (3) Build finite element models of the fabricated specimens to determine if their structural properties can be predicted. The report is organized in nine sections. Section 1 provides an introduction. Section 2 summarizes relevant work by other researchers and discusses the features of the conceptual design. Section 3 describes the procedures that were adopted to produce the specifications for the small-scale prototypes that were manufactured and tested. The design of the fabrication equipment is documented in Section 4. The manufacturing process is described in Section 5. The experimental equipment used to test the structural performance of the prototype bridges is described in Section 6. Section 7 contains the experimental data obtained using this equipment. Section 8 presents the results of finite element simulations of the manufactured prototypes. The results of this research project are discussed in Section 9.
