The new standard, ISO 2151, specifies that compressor manufacturers must now declare the A-weighted sound power level and the A-Weighted uncertainty level. Most compressor manufacturers will use a measurement uncertainty of +3 dB unless they can prove that the uncertainty statistically differs from 3 dB. The determination of the sound power level can be done using one of the following four methods: (1) measuring sound pressure over a free field reflecting plane with the microphones positioned on a parallel-piped reference surface; (2) measuring sound pressure over a free field reflecting plane with the microphones positioned on a hemispherical reference surface; (3) measuring sound intensity at discrete points over a free field reflecting plane; and (4) measuring sound intensity using the scanning method over a free field reflecting plane. The test engineer is free to choose the measurement technique; however, it is important for the test engineer to avoid measurement errors due to the package discharge with air-cooled machines and excess ground attenuation when making measurements on a free field reflecting plane.
