Abstract:

After many years of slow-to-modest increases in use as a motor fuel, ethanol has entered a period of rapid growth, with 10% and 20% fuel mixtures now common. The author traces out regional trends and the projected use of ethanol as a motor fuel in the United States, summarizes the media debates and the influences of legislative and policy issues, and notes other alternative, renewable fuels that may experience market growth in the next 10 years.
